Inland Alicante: The Other Costa Blanca, Where You Can Live Surrounded by Mountains and Nature

When we think about living on the Costa Blanca, beaches and the Mediterranean usually come to mind first. But Alicante is also one of Spain’s most mountainous provinces. Discover the inland towns, valleys, and landscapes where nature, tranquillity, and a different kind of new-build property offer an entirely different way of life.

When You Think of the Costa Blanca, What Do You Picture?

Probably the sea.

A sunny terrace. A beach just a few minutes from home. Palm trees, seafront promenades, and the Mediterranean lifestyle that has made the Province of Alicante one of Europe’s best-known residential destinations.

That makes perfect sense.

But now imagine landing in Alicante, picking up your car and, instead of driving towards the coast, doing exactly the opposite.

You head inland.

Little by little, the large coastal towns begin to disappear. The landscape starts to change. Fields, almond trees, vineyards, small villages and, in the distance, mountains begin to appear.

And that is when you may discover something many international buyers — and even some Spaniards — do not realise before coming here:

Alicante is an extraordinarily mountainous province.

Official tourism promotion for the province has even described Alicante as the second most mountainous province in Spain, with numerous mountain ranges and peaks rising above 1,000 metres. Aitana, the highest point in the province, reaches approximately 1,558 metres.

There Is Another Costa Blanca That Rarely Appears on Postcards

The coast naturally attracts much of the property market’s attention.

Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar, Santa Pola, Alicante, Benidorm, Altea, Calpe...

But travel just a few dozen kilometres inland and you will discover a completely different side of the province.

Here you will find valleys surrounded by mountains, almond and olive groves, vineyards, pine forests, and small towns where life still moves at a slower pace.

And that also changes the type of property you can consider.

On the coast, a certain budget may lead you towards an apartment or a residential development with communal facilities. Inland, that same buyer may suddenly start considering something they had never thought possible:

What if, instead of an apartment, I could have a brand-new villa, my own plot, a private pool and mountains all around me?

But choosing to live inland is not simply about getting more space for less money.

It is a lifestyle decision.

Who Chooses the Mountains Over the Mediterranean?

Perhaps a family that wants their children to grow up with more space.

A couple who work remotely and no longer need to live close to a major city.

Someone who has spent years living in an apartment and dreams of opening the door to their own garden.

Or buyers from Northern Europe who arrive looking for sunshine and discover that they do not need a sea view to enjoy Alicante’s climate.

Then there are those who are simply looking for silence.

Less traffic. Lower density. Less tourism around their home.

More nature and the opportunity to reconnect with it.

Because choosing inland Alicante does not necessarily mean giving up the Costa Blanca.

In many areas, it simply means experiencing it differently — not better or worse, just different from the stereotype.

Do You Have Another Inland Location in Mind?

La Romana and Hondón de las Nieves are just two examples.

If there is a particular town or area in the Province of Alicante where you would like to live, tell us where.

We will check whether there are currently any new-build developments in that area, which projects are available, or whether there are suitable alternatives in nearby locations that could match what you are looking for.

Because before deciding which home you want, it may be worth discovering where you want to live it.

La Romana and Hondón de las Nieves: Two Examples of a Different Way to Experience Alicante

La Romana and Hondón de las Nieves are two good examples of what you can find when you leave the beachfront behind and start looking inland.

These are two small towns surrounded by mountains, nature, vineyards and farmland, where life moves at a different pace, while Elche, Alicante, the airport and the beaches of the Costa Blanca are still within relatively easy reach — around 30 minutes away.

And it is precisely in this area that we find a very different type of new-build opportunity from what is usually available by the sea: detached villas from just over €300,000, with private plots and swimming pools and, in some developments, the possibility to personalise certain aspects of the property depending on the project and stage of construction.

It is a good example of why a property search should not be limited exclusively to the coast. With a similar budget, moving just a few kilometres inland can significantly change the type of home, the amount of space and the surroundings you can access.
